What to do
- Peel strips (using a peeler) from the upper part of the orange. For even more beautiful aromas and flavors, use a zester.
Put the peel/zest, sugar and spices into a pan and pour in just enough wine so that the sugar is sufficiently covered, but the spices are not completely dry: about half a bottle, depending on the pot size.
If you like it very orangy, then you can cut the orange into quarters and add to the pan.
- Heat slowly and, when the sugar has dissolved, cook for a few minutes to better bring out the flavors.
- Then reduce the heat, add the rest of the wine, and bring to the desired drinking temperature.
- If you’re feeling adventurous and want to give it a go – add one or two shots of gin or vodka
And if you still have cinnamon sticks, star anise and oranges left, then garnish the cups with them - looks great!
